Thanks for waiting, your patience will be rewarded. As promised, here it is: The English trial version of Rosenkreuzstilette! This demo showcases some of the various changes we've made to the game in the localization process, be they graphic error repairs, minor typos fixes, or subtle changes. You can use this demo to give everything a looksie, as it will give you a general idea of what to expect for the final release.
In addition, the installer also includes an option to preview the script of the full version of the game in English! You'll get the Prologue and all 8 bosses in English for Spiritia Mode, which is a pretty sweet deal. Give it a try, and tell us what you think.
And here's the link to the official announcement on Darkside Translations.
By the way, full English version will be released no later than July 1st. I have another little RKS-related project I'm working on, and I'm hoping to include it with the final installer. More information later. Well, have fun!
yay!
ReplyDeletebtw, like what's going on with the wiki.
I'm having a problem with the installer, it brings up this message:
ReplyDelete"Error opening file for writing:
C:/Windows/Fonts/dsgothicttf."
I need help on this. :(
@Justin: The wiki is still being worked on and should be finished by the time we release the full version of the game.
ReplyDelete@Anon: TDOMMX sure has his work cut out for him. :3 I'll inform him of your problem ASAP.
If you are getting the font error and are running Vista, make sure to run the installer as an Administrator, since that is a protected area.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Anonymous. Since this is my first time using NSIS, I was following the example laid out in the Modern UI tutorials I came across. In those, the application permissions were set to "user" and not "admin". I hadn't tested the installer on Vista, but my programmer's instincts tell me you're right on the money. I'll tweak this in the full release.
ReplyDeleteFor now, just right-click on the installer and run it as an Administrator to install the game. If the installation halted partway the first time, just install to the same folder and you'll be fine -- the old files will be overwritten.
Truth be told, my laptop came preloaded with Vista, but the constant permission requests and the inability to install and use my old software without making a point of running it in Admin mode *every single goddamned time* prompted me to downgrade to XP Pro. Funny how two extra clicks make something simple into something tedious...
Does this mean we have to get the font file to getting working?
ReplyDeleteDon't worry; the program installs the font you need, so you don't have to hunt for it yourself. It's a custom font based on MS Gothic (the game's original font) with one character dummied out so that regular spaces can be displayed properly. Using the actual MS Gothic font resultsinsentencesthatlooklikethis. This isn't the first time I've run into this kind of font display problem, so it didn't take too long to figure out how to get around it.
ReplyDeleteJust downloaded it, I'll give some feedback while actually tested ;-)
ReplyDeleteGood work for releasing it on time, already ^_^
Aside from the problem mention earlier with the inability to completely install without having to use "Run as Admin," I have to say this English demo looks zetta smexy! ;D
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the full game in English so I FINALLY understand the game's story. ^_^
I just hope that problem gets resolved when its ready...
So, I unfortunately do not have a legitimate copy of RKS, which seems to be required to use the english patch. That said, where can I FIND one these days? Himeya shop is sold out, Paletweb is sold out.
ReplyDeleteFor all intents and purposes, it seems I'm screwed unless someone can point me to an online store that still has the game.
As I recall, Paletweb allows you to make special orders even if their current stock is sold out. In my case, an acquaintance of Letty picked up a copy for me and mailed it to me directly. Places like Yahoo Auctions Japan tend to have imports for sale, too. They're a little difficult to navigate if you don't know the language, but it's not so bad if you get a friend to help you or even make use of a machine translation (Google Translate comes to mind).
ReplyDeleteI recall that Letty was planning on picking up copies of the game in bulk and offering them for sale at Schwer and Schwer Alike, but I have no idea he still intends to do so. I think it'd be a great idea.
If worse comes to worse, Tanin, our international liaison, could ask for [erka:es] to reprint the game in light of the English version's release. Who knows - they might officially add our translation into the game, kinda like the author of Warning Forever did with Aeon Genesis' translation.
As it stands, availability of RKS is iffy. I will try to contact [erka:es] about release new copies of the game. We'll see what happens.
ReplyDeleteeh....somehow I can't download this, anyone knows the reason?
ReplyDeleteI tried the demo and it worked well, nice work.
ReplyDeleteFor the "extended" trial then, how does it works ? I can't really figure how you launch it. It's frustrating, being unnable to enter Story Mode T_T
Anonymous: The server might be experiencing load issues (the guys at Romhacking.net thought that the link to the main site was broken). Just try again when the server load is lighter and you should be able to download it. I know the links work since someone has already posted a YouTube video of our localization.
ReplyDeleteLetty, you might want to make a Mediafire mirror to lighten the load.
Killing_Doll: if the Extended Preview installation succeeded (ie: the game disc files were copied and patched successfully), then a shortcut for it will be in the Start Menu (assuming you installed those too). Alternatively, the /RKS Extended Preview/ subdirectory will exist in the install folder; you just have to run rks_e.exe to start it. If you don't have the disc or selected the wrong drive, the directory simply won't exist because there was nothing to copy over.
Thanks for the tip, Mint !!
ReplyDeleteI think I just understood why I couldn't launch the extended version, I'll try that again after coming back from work.

ReplyDeleteActually, Letty = Mint. It doesn't seem right that I'd credit "myself" twice on the staff page, listed as being the heads of two different groups.
ReplyDeleteEver since I got my permanent online connection set up, I have always been TDOMMX. If you see someone with the same screenname and avatar, odds are pretty high it's me. It's an old handle that quite a few people know, and I have no intention of changing it.
I went by Magus0857 when I first got online and was a part of the Retro ISO Gaming Guild, but that was sometime last millennium. I abandoned that one a long time ago.
Ho my, sorry for the confusion, TDOMMX :-/
ReplyDeleteI'll try not to forget it, next time ! :-P
I ofter use the same alias, but actually I've got a second one, so few people really make the connection between then...
Someone plz upload this on mediafire, plzzz I can't download this no matter how many times I try T_T
ReplyDeleteI managed to download it, but where can I find the full english script mentioned for us to see?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: Fun fact - you just inadvertently quoted Zorne.
ReplyDeletePyroWarriorZ: See my earlier reply to Killing_Doll. The Extended Preview is the build with the English script sample.
I know people are going to question my decision for requiring the user to insert the original disc for the preview, so I'll lay out my rationale here:
NSIS's patch format is relatively straightforward, but the archive format that the game uses is not. Changing a single image in bg.dat results in a very different file, and the patch for it is almost the same size as the original (73 megs). That's for a single archive - the game uses 22 of them. Factor in that [erka:es] has released eight patches for the game; worse-case scenario, I would have to created eight versions of every single patch to cover each incarnation. The installer is already huge as-is. I wasn't about to release a patcher that was many times larger than the original game. Rather than go through the hassle, I had the files be read from where I know they can't be modified - the original disc.
The official reason reason I gave is also quite true - I fully want people to support [erka:es] by buying a copy of the game. I just had a practical reason for following Mirror Moon's example as well.
Whoops. Make that nine versions of every patch -- I forgot to count the original, unmodified version.
ReplyDeleteum.....can somebody upload this somewhere else plz? I can't download this in the homepage somehow o_O
ReplyDeleteHas there been any update on getting erka:es to reprint RKS?
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, the idea of an english retail option WOULD be kinda cool if it happened. If it did, I'd gladly buy the bundled package instead of just getting the Japanese version.
